My first big entrepreneurship experience was last semester in a leadership role working as the Vice President of Brotherhood for a business fraternity. My role was to try to think of reasons why we weren't bonding as a whole unit and come up with new solutions. My team organized events with silly activities where they had to compete against each other on teams. Some problems we encountered were lack of interest and unwillingness to try. This could be due to people feeling more distant from the other members in the club as they grow older. These games helped create a sense of community and unity within the organization. I enrolled in this class to expand my knowledge of the business world and think outside the box. I wanted to see business opportunities in a different way. I am also not very interested in being tied down to a 9-5 job every week and entrepreneurship is where I could be my own boss. The picture below is from buying supplies for our retreat this semester.
Hi Mary! I thought your experience working for the business fraternity was such a cool way to think of entrepreneurship. At first I was unsure how it applied, but I soon realized that your position was clearly fulfilling an unmet need, and from the picture it seems like you did a great job! I can relate to your story as I also am uninterested in the "9-5 job" and being my own boss has always appealed to me as well.
ReplyDeleteHey Mary! This was a good post and I enjoyed your example of entrepreneurship that you experienced. In my experience, it has been difficult to get coworkers together to do much of anything outside of work related activities. I believe this comes from differences in age and hobbies, and people having priorities they put ahead of extracurricular work activities like family, church, local sports.
ReplyDeleteMary, your entrepreneurship experience was very interesting to read about and it seems like you are good at what you do! Uniting the brothers of the business fraternity is really cool and you had a fun way of doing it. I agree with you about not wanting a boss or working a 9-5 job. Exploring entrepreneurship and the business world is a good way to try to do your own thing. Keep up the good work girl!
ReplyDeleteHey Mary!
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about frats, even though I have a suitemate who is in one. I had no idea that a business frat was a possibility, I figured they were just people coming together to hang out. Your frat sounds wonderful, seeing how it allows you to get valuable experience in a field all about hands-on work.
Thank you for allowing me to rethink what a frat can be!
Good job on the post Mary! I was in a similar situation in the Spring with having to force a bunch of my fraternity brothers into being involved in athletic events. I found your post really interesting since it related to me so closely. I think it was great with your approach to making the games silly and fun, as more people will be involved if there is not as much of a competition. I also agree with you when you say you don’t want a 9-5 job, and I believe that pursuing entrepreneurship is an excellent way for you to get past that.
